Point de Gaze lappet scarf

100 cm long, 7 cm wide at ends, 2.5 cm wide at center. Tag 1.2" wide.
Very good condition, one end has some faint brown staining. Picot joining thread occasionally broken.

A sophisticated Point de Gaze phase 1 design, with a bow and flowers at the ends. An occastional buttonholed ring, otherwise no raised work. Knotted grids used as fillings. Very fine thread, excellent technique. There is a thread running through the tops of the looped picots along the edges of the piece, probably serving as a base in the execution. I wonder if it could be removed.

The Tag is labeled Capper, Son & Co, 69, Gracechurch St, City.  From Wikipedia http://cosgb.blogspot.com/2011/03/capper-son-co.html:

Capper Son & Co. are known to have been Quakers in the UK, and the American branch probably also were. They were well known in Victorian London as ladies outfitters, and in 1871 they were "By Appointment" to the Queen and Prince of Wales. They had premises at 69/70 Gracechurch St. and 169/170 Fenchurch St. in the City of London. Another similar firm with family connections operated as Capper & Moon at 164 Regent St. By the 1930s the firm were at Burlington Arcade, Piccadilly, London but seem to have faded from scene in late 1930s/early 1940s.
