Burano pattern in progress

15.5" x 5-1/8"
Worn.

This is an extraordinary example of an Alençon pattern being worked by a Burano maker. The way the ground is put in on the left side is a very interesting modification of the 'brides bouclée' method. It bears little similarity to the Alencon and Argentan technique, which goes a long way into showing there are alternative ways to construct the twisted and buttonholled brides.
It is labled pattern number 2, Alençon Point. Tagliapiedra ejiusejuna?Jorbilena?

Seller says it is dated 1760.  This pattern is very closely related to that shown on a postcard from "The Lace and Silk C.y L.d.". Which would date it from the late 19th or early 20th C.

Perhaps ex. coll. Gertrude Whiting.
