Deruta Pulled Thread Embroidery placemat
10" x 14.5" (25.4cm x 36.83cm) Deruta is a town in Umbria, Italy, famous for pottery. This type of embroidery is worked on a loose plain weave linen cloth. The edge border is crochet with some picots, not sure how this is padded. I recognize the deer in the lower part of the photo, it might be a bird in the upper part. Not sure which is supposed to be the proper orientation. The stitches seem to be double running stitch sometimes worked with two threads. There are some YouTube videos in Italian. This type of work apparently goes back a long time, but has had a recent revival. Can't find much information on the web.
