Irish Gros Point border fragment

29" x 3.5"
Very good condition, a few breaks in brides and borders.

This border appears complete except at the right end where it has been modified for completion. Good work, fine thread, nice design. The cordonets don't have much sculpturing, but are extensively outlined with picots. Interesting band sewn on the upper border.

There is little technical information about Irish copies of Gros Point, but this may be an example. Copies of Gros Point were made in the convents of Kenmare, New Ross, and Inishmacsaint. Designs were noted to have been heavy and clumsy, excepting a period from 1880-1900, where lighter patterns were popular. This piece is not particularly clumsey, except in a few technical details. It may be earlier Italian or Spanish.
