Irish Gros Point border fragment

4" x 15"
Leather? backing, dirty, but intact, some worm holes?

This Gros Point pattern in progress is unusual, and probably a later 19th c product. The design and thread size is a little coarse, but there are some interesting fluted curves - technically challenging if there is a raised cordonnet. The pattern doesn't give many clues on how the cordonnet or fillings would be handled.

There is little technical information about Irish copies of Gros Point, but this may be an example. Copies of Gros Point were made in the convents of Kenmare, New Ross, and Inishmacsaint. Designs were noted to have been heavy and clumsy, excepting a period from 1880-1900, where lighter patterns were popular. This description seems to apply to this piece.
